Do YOU have your QR CODE yet?

I recently did a presentation on QR Codes to the Cayuga and District Chamber of Commerce. It is surprising how many people do not have QR CODES yet, or had not heard of them. Perhaps, they had seen them around, but didn't really know what they were. Let me try and explain QR Codes to you in simple easy to understand terms.

What is a QR Code?

A QR code is a special type of bar code. While standard bar codes such as UPC codes contain just a product’s identification number, QR codes can hold a business’s entire contact information, maps, or instructions to automatically open your phone’s web browser and send you to a company website. They have been around since 1994 where they were developed and used in Japan for the automotive industry for tracking vehicle parts. Now, they are everywhere in Japan!

There are many other products and marketing ideas available as well. If you need help or want more ideas, just call or email.

Why should I have a QR Code?

A QR code enables people to scan your contact information or open your website automatically in your web browser from their Smart Phone. If your store is closed, or you are not in your vehicle, people can still acquire the information they need 24/7. Many times people are just in a hurry and don't have time to go into your location, but would like to return at a later date. This way, the information is stored in their phone for future use.

Where do I use a QR Code?

QR codes can be used on buildings, vehicles, t-shirts, jackets, signs, billboards, business cards, flyers, post cards - anywhere you have a reasonably flat surface. They are more recently being used on headstones in cemeteries so the younger generation can find out archives about grandparents, or go to funeral home legacy pages. Some fun and promotional applications of QR code are edible QR codes made of chocolate, fabric applications with textiles, crosstitch, quilting. The possibilities are endless! 411.ca is currently using QR codes for contact information to be added to your phone's address book. You can also use them for maps and/or directions. They are fantastic!!
